Timeless Cyprus - George Pol. Georghiou

On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the death of the great Cypriot artist George Polyviou Georghiou (1901-1972), the A. G. Leventis Gallery wished to present a temporary exhibition, giving the public a chance to get better acquainted with his important works.

The main exhibition was enriched by works belonging to the artist's family, returned from Famagusta with the contribution of the Bi-communal Culture Committee. A smaller temporary exhibition, ‘Timeless Cyprus – Life is short, and art long', was also presented, dedicated to the places where the artist once lived and painted in Famagusta, and to the memories of his friends and family.

Appios® created a fitting exhibition identity, drawing readers deep into the artist’s timeless world and encouraging viewers to familiarise themselves with Cyprus, as seen through the curious eyes of this pioneering artist.

The main exhibition title, logo, and identity encouraged gallerygoers to dig through layers of memories and embark on their own journey with eye-catching typography inspired by Georgiou’s signature. An earthy colour palette was used to reflect the beauty of Cyprus, including the characteristic blue hues of the sea, the green tones of the olive tree, and the golden shades of the sand. These shades, in turn, were used to define the three entities of the exhibition.

In the parallel exhibition, visitors were encouraged to express their feelings and thoughts about Cyprus on a giant felt wall. They let their imaginations run wild and used words, pictures, and pencils to leave their creative touch on the memorable occasion.

The interactive felt wall served as a gateway to a world of exploration and engagement, transforming the conventional boundaries of art and immersing visitors in a multi-sensory experience. Participants were encouraged to touch, feel, and interact. They become active co-creators (instead of mere onlookers), fostering a connection between the art on display, and bridging the gap between observer and creator.
The captivating journey through ‘Timeless Cyprus’ continued on the pages of an exhibition catalogue. Readers were taken into the ghost town of Famagusta where the artist once lived, presenting an old world of murals, chapels, monuments, houses, and seaside vistas that remain ‘frozen’ in a world that hovers between past and present.

Publication

Having created the identity for an exhibition at A. G. Leventis Gallery commemorating the 50th anniversary of the esteemed Cypriot artist George Polyviou Georghiou's passing (1901-1972), appios® extended a captivating journey into 'Timeless Cyprus' with a visually striking catalogue.

On the publication cover, a simple white background frames the central image, drawing the viewer's attention to the heart of Georghiou’s composition. This clean and crisp design choice enhances the cover's visual impact, with a focus on clarity and balance accompanied by the eye-catching black typography of the exhibition title, inspired by the artist’s signature.

Divided into two distinct sections, the first part of the publication features works by the artist from the main exhibition, with art matte paper accentuating the earthy colours of Georghiou’s works. The second part, differentiated by woodfree paper, takes readers on a contemporary photographic journey through the artist’s hometown of Famagusta and the places that once inspired his creativity.

Simplicity is maintained throughout the publication, with white space and a minimal font lending a sense of sophistication and timeless appeal, complementing the artist’s distinctive works and drawing readers into this everlasting world.

The ‘Timeless Cyprus’ exhibition catalogue, meticulously crafted by our creative design team, is more than just a collection of pages where readers can admire Georghiou’s works. It’s a journey through artistry and an ode to a life of creativity and inspiration.
The elegant cover beckons with promise, while the carefully curated layouts unfold a narrative on every page, encouraging the reader to navigate through time, blurring the boundaries between past and present.
