Vartan Tashdjian
Vartan Tashdjian, one of Cyprus' most important contemporary artists, is known for his diversely rich paintings showcased around the world, celebrating the beauty of nature and love for his chosen homeland. As an Armenian who has dedicated his life and work to the island, the diverse landscapes of Cyprus are a constant source of inspiration: the natural splendour of its mountains and fields, its flora and fauna, and its magnificent light and colour.
appios® creative studio was approached to create a publication to present Vartan as a distinct artistic personality, drawing links between his work and his life, as documented through his personal photographs, correspondence, mathematical background, poetry, and Armenian/adopted Cypriot heritage.
Tracing his career from its beginnings to its maturity, appios® designers were determined to provide a sense of change and artistic growth on every page while avoiding a more commercial gallery exhibition catalogue look.
The publication’s canvas cover has been purposefully designed to resemble a painting, while every page incorporates the creative use of quotations, ensuring that Vartan’s personality and expressiveness as an artist emerge from his words as much as from his images. Large expanses of white frame the texts and images throughout the publication, and provide ample breathing space for contemplation. The artist's life is documented with powerful black-and-white photographic material documents, purposefully juxtaposed with the vibrant colours of his captivating works of art.
